Unmanned Autonomous Track Inspection


Railscout is an intelligent robotic vehicle that evaluates and diagnoses track and track bed conditions that consistently affect the safety and efficiency of railroads. This cost-effective system automates inspection and maintenance tasks, improves safety, and contributes to maintenance prioritization.



Sensor Fusion
Railscout leverages sensor technologies, such as laser and inertial measurement systems, to inspect track geometry, rail defects, ties, clips, and ballast.  Have a specific inspection need? Add sensors, cameras, and other accessories to Railscout’s simple mounting payload.

Change Detection
Utilizing proprietary change detection and notification software, Railscout automatically identifies differences in track conditions by observing them at different times. By recording metrics of differences in its computer, Railscout can accurately report on actionable conditions and ignore those below a designated threshold. 

Built to Industry Standards
Railscout is built from a durable aluminum chassis with 28 inch steel wheels capable of shunting the track. It has a IP67 weatherproof casing and is rated to operate from -20° F to +120° F. Other safety features include: 360° amber strobe, forward and rear lighting, reflective paint, and audible alarms.

Autonomous Controls
Operable in 3 autonomous modes. In remote control mode, an operator controls Railscout through line-of-sight controls and a handheld remote. When in teleoperation, Railscout uses sensors and control software to operate semi-autonomously and compensate for radio transmission and network latency. In full autonomous mode, the operator remotely monitors the vehicle, while Railscout leverages sensors and simultaneous localization & mapping to move throughout the network without any guided assistance.

Obstacle Avoidance & Localization
Railscout continuously maps its environment, simultaneously approximating its own location on that network. In the event communication networks fail, Railscout can use this knowledge to safely operate until direct communication is reestablished. Railscout incorporates other technologies that allow it to “sense” its surroundings and measure and map distance to obstacles or obstructions in its path.

Safely Navigates Grade Crossings
Through an onboard computer integrated with network mapping, and utilizing ground facing sensors for confirmation, Railscout is able to detect and safely navigate through controlled and uncontrolled grade crossings. When approaching such crossings, Railscout automatically reduces its speed and activates audible and visual grade crossing signals.

System Safety Monitoring
Railscout is equipped with a safety monitor system independent of Railscout’s other systems. When a violation of control and navigation rules is detected, the safety monitor or remote operator can override Railscout’s systems to place it in a safe state. The remote operator can also activate Railscout’s emergency stop, force it to reduce its speed, or perform some other action to make sure that operation is safe.
